Goals and objectives

The primary focus was to encourage people to quit smoking and to promote WSFD/Smokefree May in all small and large communities in Eastern Bay of Plenty (EBOP). Our EBOP smokefree coalition created a variety activities and events focusing on smaller communities. All events centered around “It’s About Whānau”.

Target audience

All ages and all different communities across EBOP.

Project fit with 2025 aims

The EBOP smokefree coalition’s aim was to promote the range of easy ways to access and contact AKP or smoking cessation providers in all the communities to reduce smokers in EBOP and contribute towards the Aotearoa 2025 goal. Ngāti Awa Iwi has a 2020 smokefree strategy in place. Ngāti Awa has 19,000 members and is aiming to make most of their members smokefree by 2020.

Key learnings

The EBOP smokefree coalition work very well coordinating WSFD for the EBOP. Coordinating the variety of activities and events in diverse and complex communities was a big achievement for the coalition. Communication was a key element of the co-coordinating of the events and regular meetings were held to update the progress of all the activities. Most providers hosting the events worked closely with the AKP staff - Lisa Ranapia and Kim Rameka, and the opportunity to work alongside PHA and local doctors in the community. What was noticeable were the different community members and service dynamics with some more reluctant to participant and others happy to promote as an opportunity. Another area that worked well was the media promotions via Radio and Newspaper advertisements which were sponsored from the EBOP PHA. EBOP PHA. Also we involved most of the General Practitioners to promote WSFD and encouraged them to enter a competition for best display promoting WSFD. This was one of the aims to encourage people to quit through their GP if that was a pathway they choose.

Possible improvements:

  • Some of the resource fund could be put towards radio advertisements and large advertisements in local newspapers, to promote the events throughout the month. Most services and organisations are not privileged with the access to funds to cater for this.
  • The capacity to cope with excessive referrals in the timeframe of the WSFD- Only 1.5FTE is dedicated to AKP services. EBOP is a large area and realistically some AKP referrals can be 3 hours car travel away one way. This can cause some issues for AKP.
  • For the next WSFD we discussed only having one main event or bringing the scale of events down. Because of the large area of coverage.
  • We also want to do a pre-planning for 2016 WSFD –as to what this may look like in our next EBOP smokefree coalition meeting. This will prepare a strategy for WSFD 2016.
