Smokefree Central Business District (CBD) in Gisborne and country towns in Tairawhiti.

Target audience

Gisborne District Council Mayor and Councilors.

Project fit with 2025 aims

Having a smoke free CBD is a starting point and commitment by the local District Council

What happened

Did a survey of the CBD businesses and organisations seeking their thoughts on a smoke free CBD.

Partners

Taki Tahi Toa Mano-Tairawhiti Smokefree Coalition conducted the survey, wrote the submission and presented it at the Gisborne District Council’s Long-term Plan hearings in June 2015.

Key outcomes

The Gisborne District Council is considering a Smokefree Policy for the Gisborne CBD.

Key learnings

Working together as a group.

Presenting en mass at the Oral Submission hearing.

It is vital to get our District Councils on board in driving the smoke free message home to the wider community.
