‘Rowing Together’ – Community Cessation and Awareness
Goals and objectives
To prompt more people to make quit attempts and promote smokefree 2025.
- Providing free cessation service and NRTs
- Providing cessation support and awareness for the community
- Reducing barriers in accessing cessation services.
Target audience
The general public of Tokoroa, Putāruru and Hamilton.
Project fit with 2025 aims
Awareness & Cessation
People becoming of aware of the 2025 goals and accessing free cessation services.
What happened
Cessation Stall was set up during the three days awareness and promotion at three different locations:
- 26 and 27 May - Kaute Clinic Car Park
- 29 May - Tokoroa Post office and Putaruru town
The three hours stall promotion from 10am to 1pm was staffed by three quit coaches, one nurse and two health workers.
Smokefree banners were displayed: a table with all free NRTs and WSFD resources were given out to the public.
Our health workers gave out free hot soup as it was cold and raining. A fruit basket was given out as a prize to those who sing up. A canvass of 2025 logo was displayed and the public were encouraged to show their support by signing the canvass painting.
The public were encouraged to sign up for the cessation program and take heed of the free services available for the community. Most people have never used or seen NRTs before, our quit coaches were giving out advice and information regarding the ‘use of NRTs’. Pacific island language smokefree signs were displayed and given out for free to the public – which was a draw card.
Our Pacific and Māori people were encouraged to help each other in the family and sign up together as a whānau for the cessation program.

Key outcomes
The results were very positive from the three days promotion:
- 188 people visited the stalls
- 122 people signed up for the cessation program
- 6 families signed up together to help each other and ‘row’ their canoe together
- More support with our 2025 sign up awareness
Key learnings
Worked Well:
- Good planning and good location. Most people congregated at the free medical center in Hamilton
- The three organisations helping one another were awesome. They managed to spread out the work through good communications and collaboration.
- WSFD resources were an effective way to spread the smokefree messages
- Smokefree Signs – displays of Pacific language smokefree signs drew the public to the stalls
- Quit coaches and nurses on site were very helpful.
Could be done differently:
- More advertising and marketing on local radio stations and community centres.
