Goals and objectives
To move toward becoming smokefree is the focus of Occupational Health Nurses at Woodbourne and Whenuapai Air force bases.
Target audience
New Zealand Air Force personnel.
Project fit with 2025 aims
Continued exposure to support and help for those that want to quit smoking.
What happened
A smoking survey was developed and was completed at Whenuapai.
Partners
Smokefree Marlborough Coalition and the Occupational Health Nurses and Manager – one at each Air Force Base.
Key outcomes
A work in progress but is gaining some traction. Our remaining smokers here are small in numbers and tend to be entrenched. They all know where to ask for assistance when they are ready to make the change.
Key learnings
What worked well:
- Follow up on a weekly basis and then further apart works well.
- Getting them on board after they have been referred is difficult but once engaged it all seems to go well in the majority of cases and if an individual is under stress the process is much more difficult.
- I have good success with increasing referrals from Dental, Personal Instructors and Recruit Training Instructors who identify smokers quickly.
